- Fire is a symbol of rejuvenation. It can cleanse and purify.
- Fire sustain us, but it can also destroy. We need warmth to survive, but uncontrolled fire can cause untold pain and destruction.
- Fire can provide illumination and show us the way when we are in the dark.
- Fire is also a symbol of war, might, aggression, and male power.
- Fire is linked to transformation and change. For example, the Phoenix is a bird of fire that after death, is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.
Which of these meanings fire has in our dream will depend a lot on the surrounding context. In particular,
- Kindling a fire to serve our purposes is very different from a fire that is blazing out of control.
- A fire that warms and comforts us is different from a fire which causes fear and excruciating pain.
- The objects and people associated with the fire are also important.
This is why in dream interpretation, it is important to remember the details of our dream, for example through the use of a dream journal.
1. Dream of Fire and Control
If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning. It also signals that we want change to occur.
- Kindling a fire for others indicates that we are helping or guiding those around us. Sharing a campfire can also express a need or interest in socializing and companionship.
- Kindling a fire in our home, particularly during cold or inclement weather, suggests some imminent good fortune, we may be trying to conceive, or expecting a visit from close friends or family.
- Kindling a fire while on a journey shows that we are being creative, innovative, or leading a new venture.
- A controlled fire burning in the hearth signals comfort, warmth, and light. We may be contented with our current state of affairs. Searching for a hearth fire in our dream, may signal that we are seeking comfort and illumination in our life.
If the kindled fire is extinguished by rain in our dream, it could suggest a loss of money, job, comfort, or security.
On the other hand, if we are setting an uncontrolled fire with the purpose of destroying people, objects, and property (i.e. arson), then we are likely harboring some jealousy, bitterness, or hatred in our life toward a co-worker, friend, or relative.
- Dreaming we are setting fire to ourselves, indicates that we may be experiencing extreme stress or emotional turmoil in our life, and feel like we are burning up. It may also indicate that we want to remove some aspect of our life or personality.
- Dreaming we are a firefighter or are trying to put out a fire suggests that there are many complicated and high stress problems that are demanding our attention. There are perhaps many challenges that we may have to face and we will need to work hard to overcome them. Trying to stop a fire can also express a desire to prevent change in our life.
- Dreaming we are a fire eater shows that we have strong emotions, but they are currently being kept under control. However, if we become consumed by the fire, then our emotions may be starting to overwhelm us.
- Dreaming we are worshiping fire expresses a love for war or conflict. We may feel strongly that a resolution can only be achieved through the use of force or physical might. It may also indicate a wish for finding a more masculine partner, or the need to cultivate more masculine qualities in ourselves.
2. Dream of Fire and How We Feel
How we feel during our fire dream is also very important.
Feeling pain from being burned by our dream fire, may indicate that our current life situation is threatening and painful. There could be an unresolved issue that is causing us subconscious pain. We may be consumed by ambition, anger, frustration, and other strong emotions. We may be going through an emotionally painful break-up, or having difficult problems at work.
If we are struck by pain or discomfort from the heat of a blaze or feel its bite on our face, we may be worried of being the subject of slander, jealousy, spite, or other types of verbal and emotional abuse.
Feeling good or excited from seeing our heart on fire suggests strong positive emotions or love for someone in our life. We may currently be in an exciting relationship, and have intense desire toward our current partner.
Feeling tired or nothing at all from being burned by fire suggests that we are feeling burned-out or unmotivated.
Feeling fear and great uncertainty from a large out of control fire or firestorm signals a worry for insubordination, civic disorder, or chaos around us. There may be signs of unhappiness and insubordination at work or we may worry about social unrest in our current area. More black smoke indicates greater danger.
Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire represents a pure heart. We are confident of our current course in life, and are certain of our faith and decisions. There are no unresolved issues or deceits that are troubling us.
Feeling protected and safe in a fire may mean that we have a trusted partner or a strong support group of friends, family, or co-workers that will help keep us safe from whatever adversity that may arise in our life.
3. Dream of Fire and Objects
The objects in our fire dream are also very important for interpreting its meaning.
1. House.
A common object that appears in many fire dreams is a house. Our house or home often represents us or our family. Dreaming that our house is on fire may indicate large changes that are coming and uncertainty over those changes. It may also reflect tumultuous personal emotions, loss of mental peace, or being overwhelmed by strong feelings.
A raging uncontrolled fire in our town signals broader issues affecting our community. There could be economic issues that cause job losses or political unrest.
Finally, seeing the ruins of our house or town after a fire indicates loss and sadness. We may be worried of losing someone or something important to us (e.g. family, friends, job, money), or have recently experienced such a loss in our life.
2. Fire extinguisher.
Trying to put out a fire with an extinguisher represents a desperate need to suppress emotions and desires, or avoid changes that are happening in our life.
3. Other people.
If we see another person being burned, it shows that we have strong feelings or emotions toward that person. Whether those feelings are positive or negative will depend a lot on what we are feeling in our dream, and whether the person is comfortable or in pain from the fire.
Sharing the light of someone else’s fire may indicate a desire to share in the knowledge and companionship of others. We may be feeling lonely or stagnant, and be yearning for experiences with new people.
The Meaning of Fire Dreams
To interpret the meaning of our fire dreams, we want to pay attention to –
- Whether we are in control of the fire. In particular, did we start the fire and is the fire currently being used for our comfort, safety, and illumination.
- What we feel with regard to our dream fire. Were we afraid of it or comforted by its warmth? Were we comfortable and renewed by the fire, or did we feel pain and fear?
- Other objects and people in our dream.

I had a dream that my mom and I were living together again in a small apartment, similar to the one we lived in when I was a pre-teen (similar, but not the same). I noticed that the back units were on fire and saw a lot of black smoke. My mom was asleep in the bedroom and I was screaming for my mom as I saw black smoke pouring into our kitchen (the kitchen in either a different apartment or my current one). I noticed that my mom was standing with her arms crossed in the kitchen with a creepy, evil smirk on her face and I woke up creeped out.

I keep having the same dream, but each dream the fire gets worse and worse. The last dream I had was when I was talking to my friend and our school was at great wolf lodge, we notice the fire, but it is small, so we go back to talking. But when we get downstairs the fire is spreading rapidly so we try to find a way out. We always manage a way out and don’t get hurt. We got into the school bus and drove off but the fire somehow is following us through the pathway our bus is driving on. But we managed to get away from the spreading fire. These dreams are very strange and terrifying and I don’t know what they mean.

In my dream, my wife and I were returning home from a ride around the block to get gas for the car. We had gotten into a verbal altercation with three people in a Mercedes next to us at the intersection and I pretended to reach for a gun. They started to follow us but eventually they left. Approaching our neighbor’s house which, in my dream, was a three-story tower with four sides and a roof covered in dark greenish-blue shingles, I could see a huge, round, leaded-glass window near the top of the two sides facing me. From the window directly facing us, a large and beautiful, purple and orange, vase-shaped flame shot out, parallel with the ground and fluttering over my head in the direction from which we had come. A bright white thin column structure stuck out from the center of the window, likewise centered in the “vase” of the flame. The column ended in a bright white beam of light that was waving in the wind extending beyond the flame. The flame made me feel safe and I was mesmerized by its power and beauty. ?

In my dream, my wife and I were returning home at night after going around the block to get gas and getting into a verbal altercation with three people in the car next to us. They left. As we approached our house, the neighbors house was a three story tower covered in dark shingles. At the top, a very tightly controlled and beautiful purple and orange fire was shooting out of a large, round leaded glass window at the top of the tower. Through the middle of the flame, a piercing white light beam with a flagellating tail was pointing, with the flame, directly above me in the direction we had come. The flame was vase-shaped and mesmerizing. It made me feel good. ?

I had two dreams in one night. In the first dream a burgular was in my house and trying to hurt me. He set a fire but his teenage daughter got caught in it. She didn’t appear to be in pain but the father was worried. He saved the daughter who came out fine with no burns but the father died in the fire.
In my second dream my mum had left the iron on. I noticed the iron when I first came home but forgot to turn it off. I came out of my room later to find a growing fire in the kitchen next to the sink. I turn the tap and try to set the fire out but I’m too slow and it continues to grow. There is dirty water in the sink for washing up so I scoop that water up anf throw in on the fire which finally starts to settle.
I woke up after both dreams feeling very unsettled.

I had a dream of going to the house of a person whom I know well, while on my way I met with an old man sweeping the ground and I ask which house is that person lived, then he point me to a house with a car. So to my excitement I walk directly on that direction, then on the window I see that person serving food with other people happily eating, it seems that this person is bragging his way of cooking. Then after few steps the car exploded, and I was thrown backward by the impact then when I look back to the house I saw it already engulf on fire but all the people there seems not aware of the fire and explosion. So I run toward the house try to save the person whom I shall meet that day, but the old man whom I met earlier holds me down and said “don’t go yet”, “stay here”. I was so worried that I might not save that person but the old man is so strong. Then black smokes covers the window and I cannot see inside, so I turn to the old man and somehow I manage to get out of his grip. Then eventhough I can’t see his face I felt shock to see him and I move back but trip down to something and fell down as I fell down I woke up catching my breath then I heard someone said “are you alright?” and embrace me I look on my left I see our bed with only my son and I assumed it was my wife but when I look it was that person whom I shall visit whose house is burning. Then that was the time I open up my eyes and I’m really awake. I saw my son and wife on the bed sleeping. Can some tell me the meaning of this?

Hi, I dreamt that a female friend and I were waiting for a train at the station. Suddenly, a train coach came to my nearest compartment, caught in fire. While people were trying to extinguish it, another train came from the opposite direction on the same trackmaster to avoid a collision, the train braked and engine breaks on to the platform where we are standing. We are almost crushed or sandwiched between the de railed coach, the burning coach and the wall of the station. But then we ecape. By then a third train (which we were supposed to board) comes with high speed. A few women get on to the track to cross the track, just a few seconds before the train reaches the station. The fast moving train hits all of them and go without stopping. I miss my train, I see at least 5 corpses on the track. I see a woman shuddering, bleeding and living her last seconds.
Why the train? One burns, the other goes off track, and then the right one travels past me without stopping for me to board and kills women.

I have a reacurriing dream in a house I have never known. I wake up in the middle of the night to find that that the old fashioned oven has been left on and the all wood cabin is now ablaze. Often I wake up, sometimes I get out but not my family, and sometimes we all get out or we all die. Recently, I had a dream in which people in my school were now using my house as the school. I hear a loud noise and the house shakes and as I look down into the living room a large white and brown pole is at the center with a Circle of various dancing colors in it. The house shakes again. People are running and screaming but I see no teachers. Soon people are screaming” get back to your home rooms!” So I stay at the door and help little kids find their rooms . I scream with my lungs but one girl- an 8th grader that I used to me friends with in my bus and in my neighborhood- is very calm she’s sitting on her phone as the house trembles. I shriek at her to go back to her class then slam the door and get in position in my room doubling as my home room. As I shut my eyes and squeeze my hands over my head. I hear shrieks of pain and fear as I feel the house tumble down. I now see fire all around me. Red, burning wood, sparks, frightened children. I am faced with the decision in whether to get out or stay where I am and let someone else help. I wake up, as the fire gets hotter and my face begins to feel extremely hot and painful as well as my hands. What’s this mean?

My dream was a bit weird I dreamed that a long stretch of railroad tracks was on fire and I was throwing buckets of sand on it to put the fire out. It was night time nobody else was around then out of nowhere a train conductor in full uniform appeared in the dream yet there was no train he was walking ahead of me with a flashlight and kept telling me to come.this way. When u turned and looked behind me the fire that I have been throwing sand on was completely extinguished and the fire that was burning ahead of me that I had not thrown sand on was suddenly gone. The smoke was gone and I looked up and I could see a nice clear evening sky…Then the train conductor was gone out of my dream too. I remember the last part of my dream was breathing a sigh of relief and woke up…what does this dream mean

It was first at the beach then i’m calling my dog in the sea of people around and she came to me right away. Suddenly, a kid approached me and claiming my dog as his. Then his father came up but I still hold my dog as she is really mine. The father got mad telling words of anger however, I can’t hear them all. All of a sudden, the settings changed. We were like inside a bar with no people around then he lit a bottle of liquor and he threw it on the ground near me. I wasn’t afraid of it but for my dog rather.. I was calming my dog telling her that she have nothing to worry about..
The settings changed. I was at our home and getting furious with what father and son did to me. I opened the gas tank and the stove and about to make our house explode then suddenly I remembered that my mom and siblings were upstairs so I immediately turned off the stove and the gas range and opened the doors and windows for the leaked gas to escape..
(I wasn’t afraid of every outcome. The fire that thrown at me or if I put our house on fire but rather I’m afraid that my dog and family will get hurt)
