- Fire is a symbol of rejuvenation. It can cleanse and purify.
- Fire sustain us, but it can also destroy. We need warmth to survive, but uncontrolled fire can cause untold pain and destruction.
- Fire can provide illumination and show us the way when we are in the dark.
- Fire is also a symbol of war, might, aggression, and male power.
- Fire is linked to transformation and change. For example, the Phoenix is a bird of fire that after death, is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.
Which of these meanings fire has in our dream will depend a lot on the surrounding context. In particular,
- Kindling a fire to serve our purposes is very different from a fire that is blazing out of control.
- A fire that warms and comforts us is different from a fire which causes fear and excruciating pain.
- The objects and people associated with the fire are also important.
This is why in dream interpretation, it is important to remember the details of our dream, for example through the use of a dream journal.
1. Dream of Fire and Control
If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning. It also signals that we want change to occur.
- Kindling a fire for others indicates that we are helping or guiding those around us. Sharing a campfire can also express a need or interest in socializing and companionship.
- Kindling a fire in our home, particularly during cold or inclement weather, suggests some imminent good fortune, we may be trying to conceive, or expecting a visit from close friends or family.
- Kindling a fire while on a journey shows that we are being creative, innovative, or leading a new venture.
- A controlled fire burning in the hearth signals comfort, warmth, and light. We may be contented with our current state of affairs. Searching for a hearth fire in our dream, may signal that we are seeking comfort and illumination in our life.
If the kindled fire is extinguished by rain in our dream, it could suggest a loss of money, job, comfort, or security.
On the other hand, if we are setting an uncontrolled fire with the purpose of destroying people, objects, and property (i.e. arson), then we are likely harboring some jealousy, bitterness, or hatred in our life toward a co-worker, friend, or relative.
- Dreaming we are setting fire to ourselves, indicates that we may be experiencing extreme stress or emotional turmoil in our life, and feel like we are burning up. It may also indicate that we want to remove some aspect of our life or personality.
- Dreaming we are a firefighter or are trying to put out a fire suggests that there are many complicated and high stress problems that are demanding our attention. There are perhaps many challenges that we may have to face and we will need to work hard to overcome them. Trying to stop a fire can also express a desire to prevent change in our life.
- Dreaming we are a fire eater shows that we have strong emotions, but they are currently being kept under control. However, if we become consumed by the fire, then our emotions may be starting to overwhelm us.
- Dreaming we are worshiping fire expresses a love for war or conflict. We may feel strongly that a resolution can only be achieved through the use of force or physical might. It may also indicate a wish for finding a more masculine partner, or the need to cultivate more masculine qualities in ourselves.
2. Dream of Fire and How We Feel
How we feel during our fire dream is also very important.
Feeling pain from being burned by our dream fire, may indicate that our current life situation is threatening and painful. There could be an unresolved issue that is causing us subconscious pain. We may be consumed by ambition, anger, frustration, and other strong emotions. We may be going through an emotionally painful break-up, or having difficult problems at work.
If we are struck by pain or discomfort from the heat of a blaze or feel its bite on our face, we may be worried of being the subject of slander, jealousy, spite, or other types of verbal and emotional abuse.
Feeling good or excited from seeing our heart on fire suggests strong positive emotions or love for someone in our life. We may currently be in an exciting relationship, and have intense desire toward our current partner.
Feeling tired or nothing at all from being burned by fire suggests that we are feeling burned-out or unmotivated.
Feeling fear and great uncertainty from a large out of control fire or firestorm signals a worry for insubordination, civic disorder, or chaos around us. There may be signs of unhappiness and insubordination at work or we may worry about social unrest in our current area. More black smoke indicates greater danger.
Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire represents a pure heart. We are confident of our current course in life, and are certain of our faith and decisions. There are no unresolved issues or deceits that are troubling us.
Feeling protected and safe in a fire may mean that we have a trusted partner or a strong support group of friends, family, or co-workers that will help keep us safe from whatever adversity that may arise in our life.
3. Dream of Fire and Objects
The objects in our fire dream are also very important for interpreting its meaning.
1. House.
A common object that appears in many fire dreams is a house. Our house or home often represents us or our family. Dreaming that our house is on fire may indicate large changes that are coming and uncertainty over those changes. It may also reflect tumultuous personal emotions, loss of mental peace, or being overwhelmed by strong feelings.
A raging uncontrolled fire in our town signals broader issues affecting our community. There could be economic issues that cause job losses or political unrest.
Finally, seeing the ruins of our house or town after a fire indicates loss and sadness. We may be worried of losing someone or something important to us (e.g. family, friends, job, money), or have recently experienced such a loss in our life.
2. Fire extinguisher.
Trying to put out a fire with an extinguisher represents a desperate need to suppress emotions and desires, or avoid changes that are happening in our life.
3. Other people.
If we see another person being burned, it shows that we have strong feelings or emotions toward that person. Whether those feelings are positive or negative will depend a lot on what we are feeling in our dream, and whether the person is comfortable or in pain from the fire.
Sharing the light of someone else’s fire may indicate a desire to share in the knowledge and companionship of others. We may be feeling lonely or stagnant, and be yearning for experiences with new people.
The Meaning of Fire Dreams
To interpret the meaning of our fire dreams, we want to pay attention to –
- Whether we are in control of the fire. In particular, did we start the fire and is the fire currently being used for our comfort, safety, and illumination.
- What we feel with regard to our dream fire. Were we afraid of it or comforted by its warmth? Were we comfortable and renewed by the fire, or did we feel pain and fear?
- Other objects and people in our dream.

So I don’t really have fire dreams but this one caught me off guard. Basically me, my mum and my 4 year old sister goes and visits my mums best friend and next door to her lives my biological dad who I haven’t seen in many many years. So we go round his house and meet him and it’s good n everything and then he asks us if we’re going to this party type thing that’s happening. We said yes. It time skips to later that night and I’m inside a bedroom full of other beds and a lot of children including me and my sister. We’re all looking out of the window to watch the fireworks going off for the party and a few go off at the same time. A couple flew in to the sky but couldn’t seem to go high enough and landed right in front of the house, then went off. When it exploded into a firework the house went on fire but the catch is, is that the firework going off was silent so no one knew the house was on fire except for me and all these other kids as we could see it all happening. Everyone immediately runs out of the bedroom to find their parents and/or guardians so they can escape. Me and my sister run around the house and I keep shouting ‘Mum’ really really loudly because we have no idea where she’s sleeping. So we get to a set of stairs but flames are rolling down them towards us pretty quickly and it’s just then that we hear our mum at the top of these stairs, so casually answer us with, ‘what?’ and I go wide eyed and start freaking out but my dream ends. Can someone tell me what this means?

Ive been having dreams recently. Its always where im trapped in a burning building. Everytime I find a way out, the fire destroys it. I keep hearing voices but not the words. I eventually fall down stairs and its darker and hotter. Mind you I was on the first floor. As im being burned and suffocated by the fire and smoke, I look up from the ground and saw a man with goat hooves and goat horns. I think it might’ve been the devil? Before I can say anything, I pass out from the heat and pain and wake up in my bed sweating like crazy. Im confused and starting to become paranoid. Does anyone have any ideas on what this means?

I had a dream that I was driving down a street in my old neighborhood in another state. There were multiple homes, only on the right side of the street, that had burned. They were still standing but gutted on the inside with nothing but visible black soot and smoldering smoke. There were two older homes that had burned, then the next one was fine. Then there were three homes that burned and the next one was fine. Then one home burned, then there was my old house which was fine, then the home next to it had burned and that’s all I had see. Even though my old house had not burned I was still worried about my 14 year old dog being harmed by all of the surrounding smoke. I saw her and she seemed fine then I woke up!!
Yes, I worry about her age and know that her time could be up and that bothers me, but I enjoy her to the fullest! There’s a chance that I may be moving out of state for my job, but I do not have any information yet regarding this change. At times I want to move to get away from my present manager, whom I cannot stand to be around, but I really do not want to leave the state I am currently living in. I hate the house that I’m currently living in because it’s so dark and gloomy with a lot of older, half dead oak trees around me. I am hoping to buy my own house instead of renting when my lease is up in October. However, I’m not sure where I’m going to buy if I’m not sure if I will still be living in this same state…I am dissatisfied with weight and feel I have an underlying issue with my health, but my doctor refuses to check further. So I have all of these issues going on with my life which all connect to chaos and change. I hate house fires anyway, since I’d lost a boyfriend over 30 years ago to one.

I dreamt last night of a baby sleeping comfortably in a warm fireplace. It was like it was normal and the baby was comfortable. Then an emaciated looking demon like woman with crazy teeth stole the baby from the back of the fireplace and was taunting me. It was so scary it woke me up in the middle of the night.

I had a dream last night that I was trapped. Trapped in the last place in earth that I want to be at. It’s a ranch that I grew up on, and spent a great deal of sadness and I have a lot of unwanted memories of there. I dreamt I was stuck in the ranch, and the only exit out was being blocked by roaring flames, and in the darkness of the night the only thing I see as far as my eyes reach was just the burning flames. The entire exit and town was burning down right before my eyes. All I felt was fear, fear that I would never get out, fear that I was going to die. Fear for those who already burned in the flames, I was also very sad , I felt so hopeless.
I don’t ever dream about fires, but this is the first time I’ve had a dream with fire.
Ive had dreams about the ranch a lot before, but usually it’s with tornados not a fire
Please give me your thoughts on my dream, I am deeply disturbed by it.

I dont usually dream but when I do something always happens that similar or some how ties n2 that vision. This dream: i was standing on a step stool in a closet in an apt I lived in 20 yrs ago. I pulled the string 4the light and it popped and a fires blazed… I jumped back and off the stool seeing the bright orange flames but was not afraid in the dream but awoke to my heart beating fast… I calmed myself and drifted off again and continued to have a 2nd strange dream my son was a 2 yrs old again… IMPOSSIBLE! He is a grown 20-something and in college! I dont know what any of it means but I have a job interview today and my brain never shut off so I could get a good nights sleep! I awoke at 6am wanting coffee as usual. It’s not the dreams that scare me but I know somethings ahead… when I do have dreams I expect the unexpected… it never fails… what does all this mean? Barbs

I dreamt that my gran and dad were dragged out for some treasonous reason as punishment they were to be executed by fire. So they set my gran first on fire and I sort of helped but pained and broke the executioners arm and tried to set him ablaze. I then extinguished the flames on my gran and took her in. Not much damage. It wa spoke sunburn. P.S I love my gran more than anyone in this world.

Last night, I dreamed that there was a fire in my school created by a couple of men with guns. 5 of the pupils in the school didnt quite make it out and so were forced to hide in the girls bathrooms. Then the men with guns came into the bathroom before running out after the fire got too close and we found a bunker which we hid in.

I had a dream of people looking to me to help them. I was leading them somewhere and we encountered walls of fire on both sides of the road. I told them we had to go through it, we would be ok, the road was clear, the fire is on the sides. But, I felt terrified, confident and calm at the same time.

I had a dream of a beautiful woman with long blond hair lying on a pile of wood that was being kindled with fire. I told her to get off the woodpile or she would be consumed by the fire. She didn’t seem concerned and I watched with horror as her hair began to burn. She made no attempt to get off the burning inferno. I woke up very disturbed by this experience.

So I live in an appartment that I just LOVE. The last few days I have been dreaming 9f fire though. Last night and a few days prior I dreamt of my buildings fire alarm going off through no doing of my own. Tonight however I dreamed that my appartment burned down. I have a stuffed bunny that I almost treat like a real one that died in the fire as well. Everything was lost. And I was very sad and scared. Mostly scared. I had nothing but the clothes on my back, a dead and charred bunny, and my phone. I found out my bunny died because I was able to secretly (and unsafly) return to my burned out appartment and retrieve it. But nothing else. I was intending on staying the night in a hotel the next night after it burned down and when I got back my dead bunny I was showing it to my imaginary kids in the hotel. I was also intending on calling my mom to move in with her since I had nothing and could not afford more than 1 night in a hotel. What does all this mean?

I dreamed that I was standing in my aunt’s house (which in waking life had been the location of a three-day-long fight at Thanksgiving between basically my entire family, mostly caused by my sister’s boyfriend. At the time when I had the dream, this was recent). My sister and I were the only ones in the house, and we were standing in my aunt’s living room (which wasn’t the location of the fight, but rather the one place my sister’s boyfriend refused to go in the house so it was a good place to hide). The house was on fire, and my sister and I were burning in it. The heat was unbearable and the flames seared my skin. My sister and I were both screaming until there was nothing.
After that, the dream shifts locations. My sister and I are sitting in a place that appears to be the afterlife. She’s just kind of there, staring into nothing. Throughout the entire dream, she never says a word to me. The room we are sitting in is like a middle school cafeteria, with tile floors and round tables that have colorful attached stools. Off to the side is an escalator, with living people going up and the dead (along with some living people) going down. This felt natural, and I didn’t even realize that when the dead go down to reach the afterlife, it’s typically interpreted as going to Hell. I hadn’t even thought of it until my friend pointed it out as I was telling him later. In the dream, I vaguely knew that this was the afterlife.
Underneath the cafeteria, down a small set of stairs, was a huge mansion. There were lots of fancy bathrooms that had fancy curtains instead of doors (which to me seemed very uncomfortable). They had fluffy carpets and pretty toilet seat covers and nice showers and baths. They were really, really nice bathrooms. I’m not sure why they stood out to me, but for some reason they did. I never used any of them, but I noticed every single time I passed one. The mansion also had comfortable sitting areas, with couches and pillows and rugs. It was all colorful, both the sitting areas and the bathrooms. Lots of reds, pinks, blues, greens, and yellows. The mansion didn’t have any kitchens or bedrooms, though. Only bathrooms and sitting areas that didn’t have any TVs or books or magazines or anything. They were clearly just meant as a place for socializing. In fact, the cafeteria could probably also be seen as a place to socialize. I hadn’t thought of that until just now.
In the dream, witches are able to come visit us in the afterlife. But only witches. For some reason, only the people on my dad’s side of the family were witches and could come see me. This is especially strange because in reality, my mother and sister are Wiccan while my dad’s side of the family is Christian. My Aunt Kathy and Aunt Rachel were the ones who visited the most often. I don’t remember the visits from my cousin very well. The rest of my dad’s side of the family just never came to visit, though it was understood that they could do so. A lot of the dream was spent chatting with my aunts in the sitting areas about what was going on among the living. It was typically bad news, such as Aunt Rachel’s health slowly getting worse or my cousin falling back into her depression. However, I felt safe talking to my aunts and while they were always bearers of bad news, I was always happy to see them. Usually we all sit together on the couch and we do cover the bad news but we also chat and enjoy each others’ company. My sister is not in these parts of the dream where they visit with me.
At one point in the dream, Aunt Rachel is going down the elevator. But she’s not alive. She’s dead. And for some reason I can tell. She’s slowly going down until some invisible force violently yanks her back and she travels backwards on the down escalator, out of the afterlife. I’m sitting at the cafeteria table watching in panic while this is happening, and my sister is still there just staring into space. I watch in a panic. Later, Aunt Kathy and Aunt Rachel come to visit, both alive and well. This time, I sit on the floor with Aunt Kathy and immediately give her a huge hug, instead of hugging Aunt Rachel who almost died. Aunt Kathy and I are sitting pretty close together in this part and she’s the most comfortable person to be around. Aunt Rachel is sitting away from us on a couch. I forget the color of the couch, but for some reason I noticed it in the dream. But then, I tended to notice a lot of random colors. Mostly blues, greens, reds, and yellows. Anyway, I ask them what happened and explain how I saw Aunt Rachel in the cafeteria. Aunt Kathy says she pulled Aunt Rachel back. “I pulled her back. I saved her.” It is never explained how she does that. We have a pleasant visit devoid of bad news, and they leave. They don’t appear again for the remainder of the dream.
In the next part of the dream, there’s a boy that’s always out of focus. I don’t know what he looks like, but he’s around my age. He visits me repeatedly and we talk about reading and writing and video games. I tell him how much I hate it in the afterlife, since I really do hate it there and want to be among the living. He promises to get me out of there. I put on a tattered brown cloak and pull the hood over my face, and we go towards the exit elevator. However, the elevators are guarded by dark cloaked figures that look like grim reapers, who aren’t important to the story until this moment. One of them recognizes me as a living person and grabs my wrist to stop me from leaving, and then I wake up.
Through the whole dream, I’m uncomfortable in the afterlife. I live there and life goes on, but I love hearing about the land of the living and I miss it desperately. There’s nothing to do in this afterlife, and I hate sitting around and waiting for others to visit me. And there’s also just something about the place that makes me uncomfortable and which I don’t like about it, despite how comfortable it should be. I’m completely comfortable with my sister in the dream, though she never says anything to me. I say a few things to her, but it’s mostly just “hey sissy” or “what’s up?” or “how’s it going?” And then the conversation just ends there. But the conversation ending there feels natural, though she never says a word to me or even greets me back. She doesn’t even react to me, as though I’m not there.
I’ve been trying to figure out the meaning of this dream for months but I’ve got nothing. Any ideas?

Another thing that should be noted about my dream is that I had long hair in the dream. I had cut my hair last August, so it wasn’t long around the time of the dream or around the time of the argument.

I had a dream where me and my boyfriend stayed the night at my moms old house. In my dream my little sister owned the house and her son was there as well. I used her stove before I went to bed and turned off the stove I wake up in the dream and went to the stove the stove was really warm and eventually out of no where inside the stove went on fire I opened the stove and got the flames out with water and it worked until not even a minute the flames appeared again in the stove this time I used the extinguisher. The extinguisher just made the little flame angry so it grew bigger I threw the extinguisher down and ran to get my nephew out my sister and my boyfriend which was a challenge. When I was getting my boyfriend out I quickly grabbed the home phone and when i got my sleeping family out I called 911 and the firefighters came and my boyfriend and sister started to wake up. The house was completely on fire and I don’t know if they tamed the fire cause I woke up

I had a dream that I was pushing a pushchair (I am 53 kids grown up and no babies in family at present) out of a shop and realised that all the tall buildings in the town were alight. Then cars went past us alight on the road everything was on fire. Next from a distance I could see a huge and hear a huge group of people coming towards us and they were causing the carnage.
