- Fire is a symbol of rejuvenation. It can cleanse and purify.
- Fire sustain us, but it can also destroy. We need warmth to survive, but uncontrolled fire can cause untold pain and destruction.
- Fire can provide illumination and show us the way when we are in the dark.
- Fire is also a symbol of war, might, aggression, and male power.
- Fire is linked to transformation and change. For example, the Phoenix is a bird of fire that after death, is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.
Which of these meanings fire has in our dream will depend a lot on the surrounding context. In particular,
- Kindling a fire to serve our purposes is very different from a fire that is blazing out of control.
- A fire that warms and comforts us is different from a fire which causes fear and excruciating pain.
- The objects and people associated with the fire are also important.
This is why in dream interpretation, it is important to remember the details of our dream, for example through the use of a dream journal.
1. Dream of Fire and Control
If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning. It also signals that we want change to occur.
- Kindling a fire for others indicates that we are helping or guiding those around us. Sharing a campfire can also express a need or interest in socializing and companionship.
- Kindling a fire in our home, particularly during cold or inclement weather, suggests some imminent good fortune, we may be trying to conceive, or expecting a visit from close friends or family.
- Kindling a fire while on a journey shows that we are being creative, innovative, or leading a new venture.
- A controlled fire burning in the hearth signals comfort, warmth, and light. We may be contented with our current state of affairs. Searching for a hearth fire in our dream, may signal that we are seeking comfort and illumination in our life.
If the kindled fire is extinguished by rain in our dream, it could suggest a loss of money, job, comfort, or security.
On the other hand, if we are setting an uncontrolled fire with the purpose of destroying people, objects, and property (i.e. arson), then we are likely harboring some jealousy, bitterness, or hatred in our life toward a co-worker, friend, or relative.
- Dreaming we are setting fire to ourselves, indicates that we may be experiencing extreme stress or emotional turmoil in our life, and feel like we are burning up. It may also indicate that we want to remove some aspect of our life or personality.
- Dreaming we are a firefighter or are trying to put out a fire suggests that there are many complicated and high stress problems that are demanding our attention. There are perhaps many challenges that we may have to face and we will need to work hard to overcome them. Trying to stop a fire can also express a desire to prevent change in our life.
- Dreaming we are a fire eater shows that we have strong emotions, but they are currently being kept under control. However, if we become consumed by the fire, then our emotions may be starting to overwhelm us.
- Dreaming we are worshiping fire expresses a love for war or conflict. We may feel strongly that a resolution can only be achieved through the use of force or physical might. It may also indicate a wish for finding a more masculine partner, or the need to cultivate more masculine qualities in ourselves.
2. Dream of Fire and How We Feel
How we feel during our fire dream is also very important.
Feeling pain from being burned by our dream fire, may indicate that our current life situation is threatening and painful. There could be an unresolved issue that is causing us subconscious pain. We may be consumed by ambition, anger, frustration, and other strong emotions. We may be going through an emotionally painful break-up, or having difficult problems at work.
If we are struck by pain or discomfort from the heat of a blaze or feel its bite on our face, we may be worried of being the subject of slander, jealousy, spite, or other types of verbal and emotional abuse.
Feeling good or excited from seeing our heart on fire suggests strong positive emotions or love for someone in our life. We may currently be in an exciting relationship, and have intense desire toward our current partner.
Feeling tired or nothing at all from being burned by fire suggests that we are feeling burned-out or unmotivated.
Feeling fear and great uncertainty from a large out of control fire or firestorm signals a worry for insubordination, civic disorder, or chaos around us. There may be signs of unhappiness and insubordination at work or we may worry about social unrest in our current area. More black smoke indicates greater danger.
Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire represents a pure heart. We are confident of our current course in life, and are certain of our faith and decisions. There are no unresolved issues or deceits that are troubling us.
Feeling protected and safe in a fire may mean that we have a trusted partner or a strong support group of friends, family, or co-workers that will help keep us safe from whatever adversity that may arise in our life.
3. Dream of Fire and Objects
The objects in our fire dream are also very important for interpreting its meaning.
1. House.
A common object that appears in many fire dreams is a house. Our house or home often represents us or our family. Dreaming that our house is on fire may indicate large changes that are coming and uncertainty over those changes. It may also reflect tumultuous personal emotions, loss of mental peace, or being overwhelmed by strong feelings.
A raging uncontrolled fire in our town signals broader issues affecting our community. There could be economic issues that cause job losses or political unrest.
Finally, seeing the ruins of our house or town after a fire indicates loss and sadness. We may be worried of losing someone or something important to us (e.g. family, friends, job, money), or have recently experienced such a loss in our life.
2. Fire extinguisher.
Trying to put out a fire with an extinguisher represents a desperate need to suppress emotions and desires, or avoid changes that are happening in our life.
3. Other people.
If we see another person being burned, it shows that we have strong feelings or emotions toward that person. Whether those feelings are positive or negative will depend a lot on what we are feeling in our dream, and whether the person is comfortable or in pain from the fire.
Sharing the light of someone else’s fire may indicate a desire to share in the knowledge and companionship of others. We may be feeling lonely or stagnant, and be yearning for experiences with new people.
The Meaning of Fire Dreams
To interpret the meaning of our fire dreams, we want to pay attention to –
- Whether we are in control of the fire. In particular, did we start the fire and is the fire currently being used for our comfort, safety, and illumination.
- What we feel with regard to our dream fire. Were we afraid of it or comforted by its warmth? Were we comfortable and renewed by the fire, or did we feel pain and fear?
- Other objects and people in our dream.

I had a dream that my ex drove me to a densly populated town near a forest, we drove into the forest and when we couldn’t drive any further we ran into a wooden fence. He started to take down the planks and on the other side I seen someone coming so I told him. He went to go confront the person, and as he did so I climbed to the top of the fence. When I had perched myself on the top my ex and the unknown figure threw matches at the fence and the flames rose high and engulfed me. Then I woke up.

Last night I had a dream that I was staying at my best friends house. Oddly, my 2 little cousins were there. I woke up early so I went downstairs to “play”. My cousins came to join me. My best friend and her mom were still asleep. A fire was created in the bathroom by my cousins. They didn’t want to leave the house so I began to panick. I told them If I let thin pick 2 toys to save they would have to leave. They agreed. They did so and they left and went far from the house. I then went to call my best friend and her mom. The fire alarm hadn’t gone off yet. I ran and ran and woke them up to tell them that there is a fire. They replied with: I get up when I hear the alarm. I hated that response, but I couldn’t get them up. They told me to save myself. They were still ASLEEP IN BED. I did so and ran out in the nick of time. I ran far away and met up with my cousins. The house exploded. The fire alarm was broken. My best friend and her mother died. It felt so real! I woke up at 3:30 AM shaking and daring not to touch anything! Explain please?

While I was dreaming, fire fighters were breaking through the wall of my bedroom, and there was not a fire at that time. One of the firefighters said, I could have sworn we were going to find a fire. They left. I had a big hole left in my bedroom wall, but I went back to sleep in my dream. Still dreaming, when I woke up in the morning, there was a fire. I called for help. The Fire department came back . They asked me to leave they told me to go to work, they would take care of it. I left. I realized in my dream that the house was familiar, but not any place I had ever lived. Since I retired last fall, I could not go to work, so I went to a Department store I used to work at when I was very young, that in real life is gone, but in my dream it was there. When I went in all of the people at the job I retired from were there. At lunch I decided to go home and see how my house was, and I decided to walk. Then I woke up. I don’t remember feeling afraid or anything in particular. Since one of my past homes really did burn down. I found that strange. But the dream in itself just puzzled me. Any ideas anyone

I had a dream last night where I was at school and I was eating lunch with the 8th graders (I’m a 7th grader) and after lunch we had to remove some doors from a barn. So I walk to the barn and go to the second level and search for the doors. I see some wood and I pick it up just as I see a flame starting, I panicked, throw the wood and climb down the ladder and go down into the first level. All I see is a blazing, uncontrolled fire that is consuming everything. I see a bird and I go save it, that bird sits on my hand until I get out of the barn, I ask my dad to help me put it put, he looks at me with no emotion and says it’s too late. What does this mean? What does the bird mean? I had this dream twice in a span of 5 days

Two nights ago , I dreamt of a two story brown stone home that reminded me of a childhood home in DC. The strange thing is I never lived in a brown stone. I always wished I did though. Anyway I was in this house and all of a sudden I smelled smoke. I ran outside and saw that the upstairs was on fire angry orange and red hot flames was spitting out of the window. Now that I am writing it down the house reminded me of the Town Tarot card. I ran back inside to save all my thirteen animals that were still inside. I don’t know why my lungs never burned. As I watched the house burned, my husband came home just as the firemen were taking out the hellish fire. I lost everything except my pets. I was so happy about that. Another strange thing happened in my dream. Somehow my car back seat caught on fire and in my car’s back seat window was hanging a Cowboys blanket on fire. I don’t like the that team at all. I am a proud Redskins fan. I do know a man that my heart bleeds for is a Cowboys fan. He has hurt me in the past and the present. I think the dream is about me dealing with him.

in my dream, I was in a room with a strange man and he lit a small pile of grass on fire, and told me to concentrate on it. as I did so the fire magically offed when I closed my palms when I opened my palms it lit up again. it seemed like I could control the fire.

I saw a similar dream. I am in a dull room like an attic where all the magic experiments n suff happens. There were many objects kept…which made it look like that. Also i could control fire by my eyes. Like i really had to concentrate on the thing to catch fire…or a flame also. It was like i’ve got some magical power !!

i had only one dream in my life about fire. i was in a dark room and then i saw a bunch of papers one by one laid on the floor. they were placed on the floor neatly side by side. the room looked like a tomb of some sort, honestly. the papers on the floor (the corners of the pieces of paper) were lighted and were burning only, so it looked like a room full of candles. i started walking. the room seemed endless with the papers on the ground. and the fire didn’t hurt. it felt like i could dance with it. the last thing i saw before it was over, i picked one of the papers up and i guess i got a little carried away because the fire on the paper started getting wilder. it looked like there was a arch-like door the closer i got, and maybe some windows. it looked like as the dream started to end i was going to end up in my kitchen, the old kitchen in the house i used to live in when i was a teenager. i was imagining that this was where i would end up…with the sun rising and shinning, like a regular Sunday morning. can someone tell me what my dream meant?

Dreamt of myself with two others in my cousins house. A straightener was plugged in and when I blew on it fire emerged and started burning the walls. One of the two people were also frantic but the other didn’t care. Does this mean anything?

I keep dreaming of fire trucks and fires. Last night I dreamed of a fire starting in my house and eventually catching the whole on fire. Ever weirder, I can actually feel the pain of brig burned in my dream by the fire. I physically woke up in pain and feeling my arm hot. Strange.

Hi..I dreamed last night about a whole chicken inside the microwave. While cooking, I saw the circuit breaker sparks and the fire started.I turned off the power of the oven and I confidently pulled down the circuit breaker.I continued to play chess or something like a game with friends. After few minutes, I turned on again the power and start to cook the chicken again. Here comes the circuit breaker again. It sparked and a fire started.I tried to pull down the breaker even the fire from it is becoming large fire.I managed to pull the circuit breaker down and this time I went outside the house and I told some people/construction worker about what had happened. Then I went back to play chess with my friends to play with chess while waiting for someone to fix the electrical problem that causes fire.
I’m eager to know if there is a message for seeing a dream like this.Thank you.

I had a dream where my family were in an almost Camp like place with orange jumpsuits. I don’t remember much but there were lots of warning for like some kind of natrual disaster and we weren’t aloud to leave for whatever reason then suddenly like a giant wave of tsunami there was a massive wave of flame and everyone got down and screamed none of is got hurt except my mum she was burning and it was horrible I was terrified I put the flame out and we were just sitting crying behind this historical church like building this is when I woke up.

Hello, I don’t know if my dream means anything. But last night I dreamed that I was in a house that felt like mine, and I had some people over… it was dark outside and as I looked to the front of the house from the living room’s rocking chair, I saw the mailman deliver some letters into the mailbox. A child that I think was my son went to grave the mail, and the mailbox was set on fire. So I runned outside with a bucket of water, to try to put out the fire but the fire didn’t die. Then the grass was on fire, and all my visitors were helping me put out the fire from the grass and mailbox, but it didn’t work. As we all looked at the black sky, we all noticed that the stars were moving slowly. By now all the neighbors were outside, trying to find out what was all the noise, they too noticed the stars. The stars started to move rapidly in a formation, then they made a shape of a disk. I could tell everybody was amazed and happy, I didn’t know what to think. The stars looked like a spaceship from a UFO movie. The night got really bright like it is at noon time, and everybody, I mean everybody started walking around going everywhere, but there was no telling of what was going on. We all just felt good and curious. It felt like the world was changing and there was a lot of enthusiasm, I saw people’s faces that felt very familiar like I knew them from somewhere. Some were strangers and I started walking…that’s when the dream stopped. I didn’t think much of the dream until I heard today in my algebra class by my professor that last night we had a rain of stars. I did not know that… I could be just over thinking the coincidence, it’s pretty weird! I thought I should tell you all. If you thought anything about this dream would you tell me?

I dreamed people were standing over my body, as though I were on a table, rubbing my skin with oil. I thought I should appreciate the look and feel of my skin because soon it will never be the same. They were preparing to light me on fire. It was a disturbing dream and if you can give me some insight into what it means, I would appreciate it.
ps I was reading a book before going to bed “Fall of Giants” about execution of three men by hanging in early 1900’s in Russia. Nothing to do with fire, but to do with execution.

I dreamt of burning some unwanted papers. Saw the flame while papers were burning, then put some damp hand towel on top of it to burn it as well. I was not scared in the dream, fire seemed to be under control.
Just curious to know what this means
Thanks
