Dream of Fire – The Meaning of Fire Dreams

by Aya Hajime 635 Comments

  • Fire is a symbol of rejuvenation. It can cleanse and purify.
  • Fire sustain us, but it can also destroy. We need warmth to survive, but uncontrolled fire can cause untold pain and destruction.
  • Fire can provide illumination and show us the way when we are in the dark.
  • Fire is also a symbol of war, might, aggression, and male power.
  • Fire is linked to transformation and change. For example, the Phoenix is a bird of fire that after death, is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.

Which of these meanings fire has in our dream will depend a lot on the surrounding context. In particular,

  • Kindling a fire to serve our purposes is very different from a fire that is blazing out of control.
  • A fire that warms and comforts us is different from a fire which causes fear and excruciating pain.
  • The objects and people associated with the fire are also important.

This is why in dream interpretation, it is important to remember the details of our dream, for example through the use of a dream journal.

Dream of Fire – The Meaning of Fire Dreams

1. Dream of Fire and Control

If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning. It also signals that we want change to occur.

  • Kindling a fire for others indicates that we are helping or guiding those around us. Sharing a campfire can also express a need or interest in socializing and companionship.
  • Kindling a fire in our home, particularly during cold or inclement weather, suggests some imminent good fortune, we may be trying to conceive, or expecting a visit from close friends or family.
  • Kindling a fire while on a journey shows that we are being creative, innovative, or leading a new venture.
  • A controlled fire burning in the hearth signals comfort, warmth, and light. We may be contented with our current state of affairs. Searching for a hearth fire in our dream, may signal that we are seeking comfort and illumination in our life.

If the kindled fire is extinguished by rain in our dream, it could suggest a loss of money, job, comfort, or security.

On the other hand, if we are setting an uncontrolled fire with the purpose of destroying people, objects, and property (i.e. arson), then we are likely harboring some jealousy, bitterness, or hatred in our life toward a co-worker, friend, or relative.

Dream of Fire and Control
  • Dreaming we are setting fire to ourselves, indicates that we may be experiencing extreme stress or emotional turmoil in our life, and feel like we are burning up. It may also indicate that we want to remove some aspect of our life or personality.
  • Dreaming we are a firefighter or are trying to put out a fire suggests that there are many complicated and high stress problems that are demanding our attention. There are perhaps many challenges that we may have to face and we will need to work hard to overcome them. Trying to stop a fire can also express a desire to prevent change in our life.
  • Dreaming we are a fire eater shows that we have strong emotions, but they are currently being kept under control. However, if we become consumed by the fire, then our emotions may be starting to overwhelm us.
  • Dreaming we are worshiping fire expresses a love for war or conflict. We may feel strongly that a resolution can only be achieved through the use of force or physical might. It may also indicate a wish for finding a more masculine partner, or the need to cultivate more masculine qualities in ourselves.

If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning.

2. Dream of Fire and How We Feel

Dream of Fire and Feeling

How we feel during our fire dream is also very important.

Feeling pain from being burned by our dream fire, may indicate that our current life situation is threatening and painful. There could be an unresolved issue that is causing us subconscious pain. We may be consumed by ambition, anger, frustration, and other strong emotions. We may be going through an emotionally painful break-up, or having difficult problems at work.

If we are struck by pain or discomfort from the heat of a blaze or feel its bite on our face, we may be worried of being the subject of slander, jealousy, spite, or other types of verbal and emotional abuse.

Feeling good or excited from seeing our heart on fire suggests strong positive emotions or love for someone in our life. We may currently be in an exciting relationship, and have intense desire toward our current partner.

Feeling tired or nothing at all from being burned by fire suggests that we are feeling burned-out or unmotivated.

Feeling fear and great uncertainty from a large out of control fire or firestorm signals a worry for insubordination, civic disorder, or chaos around us. There may be signs of unhappiness and insubordination at work or we may worry about social unrest in our current area. More black smoke indicates greater danger.

Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire represents a pure heart. We are confident of our current course in life, and are certain of our faith and decisions. There are no unresolved issues or deceits that are troubling us.

Feeling protected and safe in a fire may mean that we have a trusted partner or a strong support group of friends, family, or co-workers that will help keep us safe from whatever adversity that may arise in our life.

Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire shows that we are certain of our faith and decisions.

3. Dream of Fire and Objects

The objects in our fire dream are also very important for interpreting its meaning.

1. House.

A common object that appears in many fire dreams is a house. Our house or home often represents us or our family. Dreaming that our house is on fire may indicate large changes that are coming and uncertainty over those changes. It may also reflect tumultuous personal emotions, loss of mental peace, or being overwhelmed by strong feelings.

A raging uncontrolled fire in our town signals broader issues affecting our community. There could be economic issues that cause job losses or political unrest.

Finally, seeing the ruins of our house or town after a fire indicates loss and sadness. We may be worried of losing someone or something important to us (e.g. family, friends, job, money), or have recently experienced such a loss in our life.

2. Fire extinguisher.

Trying to put out a fire with an extinguisher represents a desperate need to suppress emotions and desires, or avoid changes that are happening in our life.

3. Other people.

If we see another person being burned, it shows that we have strong feelings or emotions toward that person. Whether those feelings are positive or negative will depend a lot on what we are feeling in our dream, and whether the person is comfortable or in pain from the fire.

Sharing the light of someone else’s fire may indicate a desire to share in the knowledge and companionship of others. We may be feeling lonely or stagnant, and be yearning for experiences with new people.

The Meaning of Fire Dreams

To interpret the meaning of our fire dreams, we want to pay attention to –

  1. Whether we are in control of the fire. In particular, did we start the fire and is the fire currently being used for our comfort, safety, and illumination.
  2. What we feel with regard to our dream fire. Were we afraid of it or comforted by its warmth? Were we comfortable and renewed by the fire, or did we feel pain and fear?
  3. Other objects and people in our dream.

Do you have many fire dreams? Tell us about it in the comments section below.

Last night I had a dream that I was trying to light something in the middle of dry weeds. Of course it went up immediately in flames. Me and someone else managed to dig a moat in the ground that filled with groundwater so the fire didn’t spread anywhere.

During my nap today, I had a dream that I was at some kind of amusement park/party. I recognized my ex husband and my best guy friend but everyone else were strangers. There was a young “liger” that suddenly showed up and attacked people. They got it kind of under control enough to evacuate but then everything was on fire. I couldn’t find my car and this chick grabbed my hand and we started running but this building exploded like with gas flames that splattered towards us. It hurt and we ran back but I jerked my hand away because I ran faster and didn’t want to get burned again. As I was going inside a building, an old man got hit with the same thing and was severely burned. The next second he was inside and it looked as if he’d been burned years prior.

My right eye had been mysteriously injured before the evacuation so I couldn’t see well out of it (my dominant eye)

I have dreams with fire. It’s burning the house, or nearby trees. But it doesn’t grow, it’s like it’s frozen at the spot. The fire still moves around, but it doesn’t grow. What does this mean?

I had a dream that i was playing in a darm but small room with spongebob in my school the room looked like some kind of armory or blacksmith place and had an iron door, squidward shut the door (i can’t remember why) and then a fire started spontaneously in the forge that was in the room, spongebob, me, and some kid we never noticed in the room before tried to escape, i rammed one of te doors and ran down the hallway then came back to realize that the fire was coming out of the room and burning the floor and ceiling, i ran down some stairs not even telling people about the fire yet somehow they knew and also ran, i got outside and lost spongebob, squidward, and the mystery kid (later i did see him on a stretcher), and everyone was just watching the school burn as the principle kept shouting at us to step back as the fire literally stretched itself outward at us, and somehow im on a barbie horse and i back away more away from the fire and i get out my phone and take a pretty terrifying picture of the fire that makes the school look like a gate to hell and then my horse and i run away as the fire tries to get us, school was cancelled Thursday and Friday, the school was damaged but no where near collapsing from the fire

In my dream I was asleep and fighting waking up but there was smoke. I kept thinking my sister who shares the house with me would get up and deal with it sense it was coming from her room. I was finally able to convince my body to get up and open the door to her room and find out why there was so much smoke, and I found three candles next to the wall. They looked like lucky bamboo but they were red and white and bound together and their flames was one big blaze. My sister was gone and the flame was moving inside the walls. There was an extinguisher but I didn’t want to make a bigger mess so I kept beating the flames with towels. Then when it tripped the. Dealers the lights got really bright. I got scared that the landlord would find out about the fire.

I dreamed I was on fire, from head to toe. I could feel the heat from the fire, but I was not consumed by it. When I woke the first person that came to mind was my son. I soon found out that he had been in a terrible motorcycle accident and had road rash all over his body.

I’m insomniac, I almost never sleep at night until 5 am and just wake up at 6 am, and every single time that I sleep I’ve always the same dream… I see myself on fire, nothing’s around me, everything’s black and I just feel nothing at all, I’m looking at the flames on my body without feeling heat, pain or being consumed… Nothing at all .

I keep dreaming I wake up in the middle of the night to my house being on fire and the fire is huge and spreading fast and my first worry is my very small kids in another room and if they are hurt and worrying how to get to them bc the fire is blocking me from getting to them. Weird part is I have a husband who I love dearly too but it’s like umm it even worried about him in the dream and I don’t even really think of him in the dream usually and he sleeps in the same bed and room as me. I’ve been having this dream so much that I’ve become paranoid when I’m awake of a fire and now our fire alarms are broke so I’m more stressed bc I have no fire alarms to warn me so the next pay check we are getting new fire alarms! My husband thinks I’m crazy. Every night I’m getting ready for bed I think how far away my babies rooms are from me and how dangerous that could be. What if the fire starts close to or in their room first before it wakes me up? What if it starts between my room and theirs and blocks me off? Or what if it starts in my room and my husband and myself die and no one can safe my babies? Those are thoughts that go through my head now bc I’ve had these dreams so many time! Even my lights blink now and worry me it’s electrical which could cause fires and that started after my dreams started. That’s not me being crazy bc my husband and friends see the lights flicker all through the house too. What do you think this could mean? Please any advice would help!

Get an electrician come check your home. Sounds like a prophetic dream rather than one in Jeff of interpretation.

Last night I dreamt that a fire ignited behind me, and in a blink of an eye the fire came bazing towards me, I was thinking “I’m going to die” and I felt the heat on my skin, I was scared for one second but then I embraced and accepted my fate. Then I woke up.
I had a less comfortable feeling in my body, it indicated that the dream was a kind of nightmare, but the feeling in my dream wasn’t the same as I was ok with the fire burning me. Strange dream but I guess it means that I ignited my internal eternal flame. The life force. What do you think?

I would say that the house represents you, maybe the fire is a event that happened that you now take control over. 🙂

Last night I dreamt it was night time. I could see my sister and her friend a short distance away pumping fuel but it all began to spill right away I thought they might start a fire. So I moved to get ready to help when the whole area went up in flames I saw my sister and her friend consumed by the flames, my sister screaming in pain As her legs were being burned. The water hose was in the midst of the flames so I gathered my courage called on my “protectors” and ran into the fire I could feel the heat around me but was not burned I made it to the hose and first helped my sister I showered her with the water and took her to safety.unfortunetly I don’t know what happened to this other girl my concern was for my sister mainly. Immediately following I found myself riding a brownish red horse as we ran down the street I had a sword in each hand. I pointed them to the sky then down to the ground. (As above so below)? What I can’t figure is if this is a message for my sister who suffers from anger issues and emotional outbursts or if it was just showing me that I have learned to control my emotions. Still looking into it.

I sat down to meditate in the morning and am not sure if I dozed off but I saw flames amongst the ruins of some structure which I was watching from the outside unaffected. I shook myself and tried to concentrate but saw flames again. They were not too high but had obviously had caused destruction of some structure.
Similar dreams in my childhood too.
