Vampire girls are popular in our modern culture.
Most of us are attracted to the allure of the vampire legends because they feature immortal beings with supernatural powers, good looks, and the ability to stay forever young.
This trifecta of power, beauty, and eternal youth are difficult to resist, and as a result vampires appear in movies, popular books, music, and much more.
In this article we focus on vampire girls and examine some of the key reasons why these fallen angels captivate our imagination and romantic spirit.
First Vampire Girl – The Blood Queen
Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, a.k.a. the Bound Countess or Blood Queen is believed to have tortured and killed hundreds of girls in her quest to achieve eternal youth and beauty.
Elizabeth was part of a noble Hungarian family, and she lived from 1560 to 1614. Elizabeth herself was never tried or convicted of any crimes, although her alleged four collaborators were found guilty of killing 80 people. Finally, in 1610, the Countess was imprisoned in a set of bricked rooms at Čachtice Castle. She died four years later.
Some believed that the Countess Elizabeth fell victim to a politically motivated conspiracy. At the time, there was a great conflict between religions in Hungary, and as a Protestant aristocrat, Elizabeth opposed the powerful Catholic House of Habsburg.
Nevertheless, the Blood Queen makes many appearances in modern vampire stories where her obsession with physical attractiveness drives her to murder many young ladies in order to drink and bathe in their blood.
This legend likely fuels many of the popular characteristics of modern vampires including their lust for blood, immortality, and forever youthful appearance.
Child Vampire Girl – Claudia
Another famous and fascinating vampire girl is Claudia from Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire.
Claudia was taken or turned into a vampire at a very early age. As a result, her mind matured and lived through several adult lifetimes, but her body remained that of a small child.
Most of us would welcome the gift of eternal youth, but for Claudia, it ultimately became more of a curse.
Her mind grew older and craved for adult interactions, relationships, and experiences with others, but her body will never grow up. She is forever trapped to play the role of a child and will never achieve physical maturity.
Claudia’s character and story explores an interesting aspect of immortality – We want to be forever young, but not too young. It suggests that a mature mind in an immature body will ultimately lead to great emotional frustration and an unbalanced psyche.
Dresden Vampire Girls
The Dresden Files is a popular fantasy detective series created by Jim Butcher.
In Jim Butcher’s wonderful world of intrigue, mystery, and magic, there are vampires, ghosts, demons, fairies, werewolves, wizards, and much more.
Vampires play a key role in Butcher’s stories and there are three vampire girls who kick some ass – Bianca St. Claire of the Red Court, Mavra of the Black Court, and Lara Raith of the White Court.
These vampire girls are each enthralling in their own particular style.
The Black Court vampires are the ugly vampires. They have great physical strength but their corpse-like appearance set them most apart from humanity. Mavra packs a strong supernatural punch, but that comes at the cost of looking like a zombie. In Mavra, we explore the trade-off between beauty and power.
The Red Court vampires are bat-like creatures that can wear a human flesh mask. Many of them appear beautiful and glamorous in their human aspect, but are slimy and cruel underneath their attractive outer shell. In Bianca we see that outer beauty may only be a distracting illusion, and it is really inner beauty that we should strive for.
The Allure of Vampire Girls
The White Court vampires are succubi who feed off the emotions and life force of humans.
In terms of supernatural powers, they are perhaps physically weaker than the other court vampires. However, their natural human form and supernatural good-looks gives them the ability of blend in and significantly influence human organizations.
They are arguably the most powerful of all the vampire courts because they can most easily influence humans, and bring about world changes that are to their greatest advantage.
Lara Raith and the White Court vampires are most representative of the popular vampires of today. They are suave, beautiful, powerful, and immortal. We all want to be like them and are envious of their looks and talents.
In Lara Raith we recognize the great temptation of vampiric powers. However, no matter how powerful or beautiful, vampires are still predators who feed upon those who are weak and unable to protect themselves.
The story of vampires is captivating because it is a story about us, our inner conflicts, and self-control.
Do we let our desire for youth, beauty, and power overwhelm our conscience; or do we temper those desires with reason and morality.
The story of vampires is captivating because it is about escaping death and living forever. However, we are stealing the life force of others so that we may prolong our own vitality.
In truth, these vampire girl stories are morality puzzles about our own values and priorities.
- Is it right to take from the weak so that the strong become stronger? What about taking from those who are cruel or evil?
- If we are more powerful, beautiful, and clever; does that mean we are more entitled to life than others who are less attractive or talented?
What do you think? Do you want to be a vampire?
