- Fire is a symbol of rejuvenation. It can cleanse and purify.
- Fire sustain us, but it can also destroy. We need warmth to survive, but uncontrolled fire can cause untold pain and destruction.
- Fire can provide illumination and show us the way when we are in the dark.
- Fire is also a symbol of war, might, aggression, and male power.
- Fire is linked to transformation and change. For example, the Phoenix is a bird of fire that after death, is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.
Which of these meanings fire has in our dream will depend a lot on the surrounding context. In particular,
- Kindling a fire to serve our purposes is very different from a fire that is blazing out of control.
- A fire that warms and comforts us is different from a fire which causes fear and excruciating pain.
- The objects and people associated with the fire are also important.
This is why in dream interpretation, it is important to remember the details of our dream, for example through the use of a dream journal.
1. Dream of Fire and Control
If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning. It also signals that we want change to occur.
- Kindling a fire for others indicates that we are helping or guiding those around us. Sharing a campfire can also express a need or interest in socializing and companionship.
- Kindling a fire in our home, particularly during cold or inclement weather, suggests some imminent good fortune, we may be trying to conceive, or expecting a visit from close friends or family.
- Kindling a fire while on a journey shows that we are being creative, innovative, or leading a new venture.
- A controlled fire burning in the hearth signals comfort, warmth, and light. We may be contented with our current state of affairs. Searching for a hearth fire in our dream, may signal that we are seeking comfort and illumination in our life.
If the kindled fire is extinguished by rain in our dream, it could suggest a loss of money, job, comfort, or security.
On the other hand, if we are setting an uncontrolled fire with the purpose of destroying people, objects, and property (i.e. arson), then we are likely harboring some jealousy, bitterness, or hatred in our life toward a co-worker, friend, or relative.
- Dreaming we are setting fire to ourselves, indicates that we may be experiencing extreme stress or emotional turmoil in our life, and feel like we are burning up. It may also indicate that we want to remove some aspect of our life or personality.
- Dreaming we are a firefighter or are trying to put out a fire suggests that there are many complicated and high stress problems that are demanding our attention. There are perhaps many challenges that we may have to face and we will need to work hard to overcome them. Trying to stop a fire can also express a desire to prevent change in our life.
- Dreaming we are a fire eater shows that we have strong emotions, but they are currently being kept under control. However, if we become consumed by the fire, then our emotions may be starting to overwhelm us.
- Dreaming we are worshiping fire expresses a love for war or conflict. We may feel strongly that a resolution can only be achieved through the use of force or physical might. It may also indicate a wish for finding a more masculine partner, or the need to cultivate more masculine qualities in ourselves.
2. Dream of Fire and How We Feel
How we feel during our fire dream is also very important.
Feeling pain from being burned by our dream fire, may indicate that our current life situation is threatening and painful. There could be an unresolved issue that is causing us subconscious pain. We may be consumed by ambition, anger, frustration, and other strong emotions. We may be going through an emotionally painful break-up, or having difficult problems at work.
If we are struck by pain or discomfort from the heat of a blaze or feel its bite on our face, we may be worried of being the subject of slander, jealousy, spite, or other types of verbal and emotional abuse.
Feeling good or excited from seeing our heart on fire suggests strong positive emotions or love for someone in our life. We may currently be in an exciting relationship, and have intense desire toward our current partner.
Feeling tired or nothing at all from being burned by fire suggests that we are feeling burned-out or unmotivated.
Feeling fear and great uncertainty from a large out of control fire or firestorm signals a worry for insubordination, civic disorder, or chaos around us. There may be signs of unhappiness and insubordination at work or we may worry about social unrest in our current area. More black smoke indicates greater danger.
Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire represents a pure heart. We are confident of our current course in life, and are certain of our faith and decisions. There are no unresolved issues or deceits that are troubling us.
Feeling protected and safe in a fire may mean that we have a trusted partner or a strong support group of friends, family, or co-workers that will help keep us safe from whatever adversity that may arise in our life.
3. Dream of Fire and Objects
The objects in our fire dream are also very important for interpreting its meaning.
1. House.
A common object that appears in many fire dreams is a house. Our house or home often represents us or our family. Dreaming that our house is on fire may indicate large changes that are coming and uncertainty over those changes. It may also reflect tumultuous personal emotions, loss of mental peace, or being overwhelmed by strong feelings.
A raging uncontrolled fire in our town signals broader issues affecting our community. There could be economic issues that cause job losses or political unrest.
Finally, seeing the ruins of our house or town after a fire indicates loss and sadness. We may be worried of losing someone or something important to us (e.g. family, friends, job, money), or have recently experienced such a loss in our life.
2. Fire extinguisher.
Trying to put out a fire with an extinguisher represents a desperate need to suppress emotions and desires, or avoid changes that are happening in our life.
3. Other people.
If we see another person being burned, it shows that we have strong feelings or emotions toward that person. Whether those feelings are positive or negative will depend a lot on what we are feeling in our dream, and whether the person is comfortable or in pain from the fire.
Sharing the light of someone else’s fire may indicate a desire to share in the knowledge and companionship of others. We may be feeling lonely or stagnant, and be yearning for experiences with new people.
The Meaning of Fire Dreams
To interpret the meaning of our fire dreams, we want to pay attention to –
- Whether we are in control of the fire. In particular, did we start the fire and is the fire currently being used for our comfort, safety, and illumination.
- What we feel with regard to our dream fire. Were we afraid of it or comforted by its warmth? Were we comfortable and renewed by the fire, or did we feel pain and fear?
- Other objects and people in our dream.

I have been having the same dream on and off for 20 years, just more family members are added.
My siblings and my mother are in a car and it catches on fire. The fire is so hot that I see their faces burn completely away and they die. It’s truly horrific!!!
My wife appeared in the dream about a year before we got married and now my nieces and nephews (they’re toddlers and newborns) die in the fire.
I cannot save them no matter how hard I try.
I wake up crying and feel like I’m going to throw up.
Last night my newest nephew was in it and I was able to get him out of the car and to hospital but he died there.
Any interpretations would be welcome

I was running away, but don’t know what i was running away from. It was in the forest. But it wasn’t night. It was day. I ran and then I felt protective over the people living in the forest. This one man with two children asked me to protect them from other people from taking their property in the forest. So I said of course. I felt like i was missing something. Not something….2/3 other people that were like me. So I built a kinda secret hiding place for them. It was white. Kinda like a bigger version of Dumbledore’s coffin. And it was in green. All the people gathered inside of it and we prepared us including me. I started making fire and blew a little from my bare hands and it didn’t work the first couple of times. Then I asked loudly if anyone had brown slime (?).
I got it from a random girl and then I dipped my hands into it. I started making fire. I blew and then the whole building got foggy, but not like a normal foggy color, but a greenish color. I felt powerful and safe. These random people that were after the other people living in the forest didn’t notice us or the building because they (the good people living in the forest) had thrown some kind of protection spell over us and the building. So they (bad people) didnt see us. I woke up, but I felt proud and pride inside me! 🙂 And now I wonder what this mean? What kind of dream was that?

I continue to have the same dream however it’s not always the same… My home town is on fire and everywhere I go, I’m running all over town looking for my boyfriend. I go to his job it’s on fire with the rest of the town but he’s not there my ex is. In one dream I was in my ex’s town and he was willing to help me find my boyfriend but in this dream he had no interest in helping me find him and half my skull was missing. Its was like I was watching a movie but very active in my dream. I’ve been waking in panic maybe if I knew I could sleep with peace. Can anyone tell me what this “means” give me some understanding… Please.

I had a dream last night that my childhood home was on fire, while I was standing outside watching it burn. I kept screaming for my dad but he never came. Then, my uncle showed up. (Odd thing is that I have very little relationship with any of my aunts/uncles.)

Someone help me understand this dream. I’ve been having it for a few days now and I don’t know what it means. I’m in a room it’s all white but there are no doors. There are windows with a bright light peering through but no known source. I’m not me I think I’m a man I can only see my arms but I know I have a gold watch in my right wrist. There’s a girl with me I don’t know her and I can’t really make out her face but she’s scared I can hear her heavy breathing. All of a sudden the floor begins to fall through and a fire starts to engulf the room. No way out but I can hear her screaming as the fire is coming closer and closer to her. It was so vivid I could hear the flames and her screaming as well as the watch ticking. But finally the floor under her feet gives out and I jump to save her only to grab her wrist but I can’t pull her up, and I have this constant thought that I can’t let her fall but idk.. What happens next that’s as far as I’ve gotten. I remember feeling anxious and out of place but like what I was experiencing was real. I’m going crazy someone help.

That little girl is you you’re trying to save yourself maybe a man figure in your life as a child has affected you in some kind of negative way, you may have suppressed the memory or just don’t remember but it’s in your subconscious the fire is a symbol of fear who ever that male figure is you fear them… that’s what I get from it.

I need a dream interpretation please. I don’t know where we were going but it looked a old tavern and I was with my kids. The parking was in fields and you had to walk some distance. When we went to leave my car was gone. Some guy helped us search and search for it. After a while we called the police. Next thing I know my car is there and a stranger is saying “he likes to take and hide people’s cars”. I have no idea who “he” is. I was thanking the man for helping look and my middle child was sitting in the drivers seat looking backwards out the rear window at me (he’s 8) and the car started rolling. As I dropped everything to run to it, my car rolled into another and busted out in flames. I continued to run to it and pulled him out. He was completely on fire so I threw my coat over him and put in out and laid on top of him til an ambulance came. They took him to the hospital. Next thing I know I’m looking for the guy that took my car cuz I knew it was his fault. I was in tears. I found him upstairs in the tavern. He was a balding older man who thought it was funny and made a joke about it. Next thing I know I’m beating this guy with a pool stick in the head for what he did to my son. As I go downstairs everyone is gone. The tavern is vacant. I go outside and everyone, including friends of mine are standing around with white candles lit in silence. What does that means?! I woke in a panic attack last night!!!

I had a dream that my dad burned in a fire. I think it was close to a McDonalds. And my brother, my mother and I were driving away from the fire. I oddly didn’t feel sad or pity for my dad during the dream.
Can someone plz interpret this for me?

The setting is in a mountain community. My parents lived in this community. Their home was threatened by a large fire making it’s way towards their property. They called me to come help get their belongings to evacuate. We had packed much of the home, but there was still a bit there. In the middle of the first night of being there, I woke and saw the fire was too close and I needed to wake everyone to evacuate. We were scrambling to grab items, and I was trying to chase after dogs to save them. The following day, we returned. The new buyers of their home were there, moving their items in (this was actually someone I knew from my past through my profession). Her and her husband were unpacking all their boxes. We stayed the night there again, and again I woke in the middle of the night. This time the fire was so close my step father and I had gone outside to wet the property in order to prevent the fire catching the house. In the chaos, I was yelling at my Mom to tell the buyers, they need to evacuate. The house is made up of heavy wood and if we don’t get all hands to help, there will be eminent loss. My parents and I got in a helicopter to evacuate. The buyers were still there when we left. Then I woke up.

So I had this weird dream, I as sitting at a table outside of a restaurant enjoying a glass of water and smoking a sigaret with my boyfriend (I dont have a boyfriend in real life, but obviously I had in my dream, an unknown guy) and another friend (unknown as well), when I noticed the building next to us was on fire. So we moved our table so we wouldn’t be in the way for the firefighters. We could see people trying to get out, here and there we could see some flames, I think the fire probably started by a sigaret in the trash of one of the bathrooms in the building actually. Then we saw some stupid curious people going in the burning building and we were judging them, how stupid can they be? You don’t go into a burning building?! The second after I was in that burning building… what? How did I get there? And how stupid am I to actually criticise people of going into a burning building and then do exactly the same thing right after! So of course we wanted to get out, we could feel the heat and the danger, but they had locked the entrance so no more stupid people would go inside. So a woman firefighter showed us another way out, downstairs and behind the building. We got into the backstreet where life was at its normal, people smoking again, one guy in particular was smoking a big fat joint and asked me if I wanted some, while I was grasping for air like a crazy person. I answered no thanks, that I had stopped 2 month earlier and didn’t wish to smoke that anymore… so usually I’m pretty good at interpreting my own dreams, but this one has so many different things in it… I’m not sure what it means…. any interpretation? suggestions?
Thank you

I had a dream I was sleeping and someone told me to get up and get out of the house I looked out the window and saw a bleacher with empty seats and a grill and it started catching fire and a line of fire started going towards my window I got out and ran up a hill and the trees were separately catching fire and then the were back to normal and another tree would catch fire and go back to normal and then went back to the scene of being in my room looking out the window before the bleacher caught on fire and thinking about why someone would try to set me on fire then running out and I was walking on the hill looking for a new place to live because my house was destroyed by the fire then I was at my new place changing into something for a hot day because it looked like a hot day outside and when I went out a few moments later it started to rain so hard it looked like a waterfall was over me and I was cold and was a long way from home then I woke up..

I dreamed that there was a little fire around my feet and when I stomped it out another little fire came back close by, i stimped it out and then another one came. I did this about 3 or 4 times then hollered for my husband to come help me put it out. But I woke up before he came. I wasnt scared at first but at the last one before I called for my husband I started to feel panic. When I woke up I just felt it was an important dream but I can’t figure out what meant. The fires were around my feet in my living room in front of the Christmas tree. Can anyone interpret this dream for me?

I dreamt that I was in a house and there was a fire there, I was trying to escape and trying to save my daughter who is only young be moved away from the fire. I think she could of been hurt but I can’t remember that. I do remember though that as I was escaping the fire there was boiling water on the ground and it got me and I didn’t realise until I got outside that that firey hot water at scolded my ankles and I could see my skin melting off. It was so terrible to see this. I couldn’t obviously get far with my feet being burnt and all. I was waiting for an ambulance to come rescue me or something. Then after looking and seeing the damage to my body, my ankles, i noticed my arm had melted pretty badly. Then I noticed I could see the inside of my arm. it wasn’t blood, it was flesh, but this bright white glow matter that was iridescent.. as soon as I saw that I felt immense pain and suffering, like unbearable pain ! some work colleagues from my past appeared and they said ‘ your ok’ what are you so worried about. be tough ! I felt like screaming for my mother, my father , my family and then my dream ended. ! It started with a big fire though, in a house or my house. It was a lot of trauma and chaos.

I really would like some thought on my first fire dream ever. It’s a little trippy to read all the possibilities that could be going on with me subconsciously.

This is my first dream of a fire. It was my childhood home that was on fire but I never saw or felt it. I just knew it was. I felt fear at first then I call 911. I hung up. I felt calm after that and tried to put it out myself. The hose was a regular garden hose and when I turned on the water the house was not my house so I tried to stretch it to reach and as I was wetting the place it didn’t look like my childhood home but I could see two houses down that it was. I could hear the siren is the distance. I felt a little panic but then calm again to Un screw the hose and get it closer. I got it done, I turned the water on to wet the roof and begin to put it out. I still didn’t see or feel the heat or anything, but I could hear the fire and see the smoke. I could see glimpses inside and the progression of the fire like I was watching it on tv. I just felt the need and urge to put it out, it was the house I grew up in! I have not seen that house since I was 25, I’m now 53 and live in St. Thomas USVI. First time ever dreaming of fire and I usually don’t dream nor remember them with such clarity.
