Whether you find a man attractive or not clearly depends on a variety of factors, including personality, charm, sense of humor, financial position, physical appearance and much more.

Physical appearance will have different levels of importance for different people, but studies in social psychology show that it is an important factor in determining how we all make decisions.

As such applications have become more pervasive, the concept of exchanging textual messages with the people we know has become less foreign and more accepted.

The next step then is to use this convenient form of communication to meet new people for the purpose of dating. This is what online dating sites allow you do.

However, relationships in more general online communities are a bit different. Strangers meet online, and form bonds, with the expectation that they will never meet in real-life.

In many ways, this last caveat – never meeting in real-life – gives us a lot of freedom. We need not worry about how attractive we are, our age, race, riches,how we dress, or many of the other things that we commonly worry about in real world relationships. We can be whomever we want to be, and explore aspects of ourselves that we may be too shy to reveal in a real world setting.

Some may argue that virtual relationships are more real for this reason.

In virtual worlds we are communicating on a mind-to-mind level without the limitations placed upon us by our physical appearance.

Not surprisingly, this anonymity can also become a weakness. Some people use this feature to present themselves in a way that will engender pity or sympathy from others and then utilize those feelings to obtain monetary or sometimes merely emotional gain.

Many people who have experienced these bad relationships become disillusioned, and prefer to stay away from forming any ties in virtual venues. There is also a very negative social stigma that is attached to those who have been deceived in this way, because they are seen as naive and foolish.

Confidence tricksters exist in the real world as well, but again, their reach is more limited, and it takes greater effort to deceive someone in the physical world where your appearance can be used to judge you.

In fact, it takes a lot more skill and imagination to foster a lasting relationship in a virtual world because there are few visual cues, and no ability to touch and feel each other.

However, you are more free in a virtual world because you are protected to some degree by the shield of annonimity. In addition, because there are so many people that you can reach, you are more likely to find someone who shares more of your interests than the people you meet in the real world.

If you give it the chance, virtual love may even be deeper than real love.

Personal hygiene and grooming are also of utmost importance. Comb-overs do not, has not, and will never appeal to women. Protruding nose hairs are also a big no-no.

When people think of James Bond, brainy is not necessarily the first thing that pops to mind. But James Bond does have the brains to go with everything else, and this is what makes him the best of the best.

Not only can James Bond curse in any foreign language, but he can also converse in them, albeit, with a strong English accent. James Bond is witty, quick, and well versed in, pretty much, anything. James Bond is adept at playing chess, poker, and whatever mind-games evil villains throw his way.

In reality, it is simply not possible for anyone to be that brainy; not evenYogi. However, a little bit of homework can go a long way towards simulating brilliance. Women like men who can listen and talk intelligently about their topics of interest.

Whenever you are out with a woman that you like, make sure to listen to her. Remember her likes and dislikes. Google her or subtly inquire friends about her favorite activities; then, do some research on them. Be prepared with interesting questions and clever viewpoints, but do not just blurt them all out at the start of the date. Timing is crucial; so be patient, and slowly introduce your prepared brilliance in an off-hand and natural manner.

This got me thinking; what is the fair-value of a lunch? Most of us would be happy to get a free lunch, so our fair-value is about $15.

But what about a famous and attractive woman like Angelina Jolie.

Would that same fund manager pay 2.1 million to have lunch with Angelina Jolie? And if not, how much would someone else pay?

To answer this question we turn to the economic laws of demand and supply.

Elasticity of Demand

Simply put, the elasticity of demand determines how much we can raise the lunch price for Angelina Jolie before you decide to drop out and lunch with someone else, or just lunch alone. Demand elasticity is dependent upon four factors:

1. Number of substitutes: The more substitutes there are, the more elastic demand is. Because there are many celebrities, I am more willing to forgo lunch with Jolie, and instead go out for lunch with Eric Estrada, at a lower price.

In contrast, there are no other fund managers with the same business savvy and magic touch as Buffett; so there are few, if any substitutes. This makes demand more inelastic and leads to a higher price.

2. % of purchaser’s budget: 2.1 million may seem like a large sum to us because our total assets may not even add up to 10% of that figure. On the other hand, 2.1 million is small change to Zhao Danyang’s net worth.

Because Warren Buffett’s purchasers tend to be rich, they are willing to pay more for the privilege of having lunch with him. In contrast, Angelina Jolie fans, like you and me, have a lot less money, so our demand is more elastic. I.e. we are more willing to forgo lunch with Jolie.

3. Type of good: Necessities and emergency goods have more inelastic demand than luxury goods. Having lunch with a celebrity, whether it be Angelina Jolie or Warren Buffett, I think, qualifies as a luxury good. Demand therefore is more elastic.

4. Time until purchase: Does the buyer need to have lunch as soon as possible, or is there no hurry.

Zhao Danyang probably wants investment advice from Buffett as soon as possible. In this way, he stands to make more money sooner, while making fewer bad investments. Having lunch with Angelina Jolie is probably less time critical.

All this shows that demand for Angelina Jolie is a lot more elastic (flexible) than demand for Warren Buffett. Elastic demand results in a flatter demand curve (see chart), which means that price will not change much even to significant changes in demand and/or supply.

Probably a lot less then 2.1 million. Even though there is greater demand (popularity) for Angelina Jolie, her demand is a lot more elastic.

I want to end by considering how much we would pay to have lunch with a loved-one.

In this case, demand is high, and inelastic, however, supply is also high (you generally have good access to your loved one). However, if you were to suddenly lose access, price would go up significantly.

When you go home tonight, take some time and show your loved ones how much you appreciate them. Just because you have access, does not mean you should take them for granted.

Finally, the Goddesses agreed to let Paris of Troy select the rightful recipient of the Apple. Each Goddess tempted Paris with various gifts, but it was Aphrodite who won by offering young Paris a view of the most beautiful woman in the world – Helen of Sparta. Ultimately, this love for beauty led to the Trojan War, the destruction of Troy, and the deaths of countless people.

This theme of love and beauty gone bad repeats itself in many of our stories and popular myths. In Snow White, for example, the evil stepmother had to be the most beautiful, and was willing to kill in order to keep that coveted title.

In fact, in Latin, the words for apple (mālum) and for evil (malum) are nearly identical.

In Arthurian legend, the magical island of Avalon is named after the apple. Avalon comes from the Welsh word afal, which means apple. Avalon is therefore the Isle is Apples.

Is the apple a symbol of good or evil?

While researching this interesting question, I came across a fun story about Apple Computer’s logo. Apparently, some people have criticized the company because its logo depicts an apple with a bite taken out of it. For some, this indicates support for eating the Forbidden Fruit of Knowledge, which in turns leads to support for the Devil and man’s fall into sin.

I think the apple, first and foremost, is the symbol of love and beauty.

From love and beauty, we are inspired to perform great acts, and to create great works of art.

However, love and beauty can also become an all consuming obsession. This loss of self-control leads us to commit equally heinous acts of violence and cruelty. As is told over and over again in popular myths, legends, and stories, love and beauty can lead to much sadness and destruction.

The seeming inconsistency of the apple both as a symbol of good as well as evil is really not an inconsistency at all. Rather, it reflects our own battle with love and lust, with passion and obsession. It reflects our struggle with self-control in the presence of great temptation.

The apple is not good or evil, just as love and beauty are not wholly good or wholly evil. However, they can cause us to perform extremely good or extremely evil acts.

Proud nasty people are easy to spot and easy to deal with. They think that being nasty is cool, hip, and clever. As such, they devote their lives to the Order of Nasty; trying out new nasty tactics, searching for victims to be nasty to, and looking for other nasty people who can appreciate their art.

You may pity proud nasty people because you think they are unbalanced, have a nasty past, or a difficult life. But this is rarely the case. Most of them have wonderful childhoods and are enjoying a happy life today.

You may think that they are sick, cruel, or evil; but it is no such thing. It is just a difference in belief systems.

They believe that nastiness results in a better tomorrow, and you believe otherwise.

Because proud nasty people are so comfortable and open with their choice of nasty, you always know where they stand. You can always predict their behavior, and as such, can more easily neutralize them.

2. Closet Nasty People

Closet nasty people know that they are nasty, but are unwilling to admit it to themselves and others.

Their every instinct tells them to be nasty, but they fear those instincts, and fear rejection from society. To compensate, they try to be nice and mimic the actions and words of people they perceive to be nice. However, this is contrary to their nature and all the forced pretension brings great unhappiness and conflict into their lives.

Closet nasty people are more difficult to detect. Some are extremely adept at mimicking niceness and it is difficult to separate the act, from the truth.

But does it even really matter?

Yes, very much so. Pretending to be nice is extremely tiring. It will not be long before a closet nasty cracks, and explodes in a cloud of nastiness. Suffice it to say that you do not want to be anywhere close to that blast radius.

3. Backstabbing Nasty People

Backstabbing nasty people are the most dangerous of all the nasty people.

They are nasty and actually have brains to go along with it. To them, “nasty” is an exciting game and the whole world is their playground.

Backstabbing nasty people perfect the art of being nice because it is part of the hunt. They attract unsuspecting victims into their net by being absolutely charming, and perfectly nice. Once you are caught in their trap, be thankful if they simply swoop in for the kill. More likely, they will string you along and slowly savor the process of slow torture.

Do not mistake the true backstabbing aficionados from their less proficient backstabbing brothers at your workplace. Most “so-called” workplace backstabbers are inept, and are closer to closet nastiness rather than backstabbing nastiness.

True backstabbers never reveal their colors to their victims.

They understand that leaving wronged victims about is bad for business and a very risky proposition. The only time a true backstabber may reveal himself, is right before the kill.

4. Confused Nasty People

Confused nasty are the people who are unsure which path in life they should take.

They are attracted to some of the properties of nice people, but also seduced by the darker side of nasty. People who are confused nasty will ping-pong from one side to the other. One day they may try out nice and the next, they may get enthralled by nasty.

Confused nasty people may stay confused for a very long time. Whether they come up on the side of nasty or the side of nice will depend on the people around them. The good thing about a confused nasty person, is that you can influence him, because he has not made up his mind yet. However, always be careful; he can just as easily be influenced by everybody else.

5. Careless Nasty People

Careless nasty people are just narcissistic people. They are only concerned with their own well-being and success. In their search for money, power, or fame, they may undertake actions that seem nasty, but are actually just fall-out from their pursuit of self.

Careless nasty people are not intentionally nasty. Rather, they just do not care. If they have to resort to nasty to achieve their goals then so be it; if they have to resort to nice, they will do that too. To them, nastiness is not a personal attack, it is just part of doing business.

6. Clueless Nasty People

Clueless nasty people truly believe that they are one of the good guys. They think they are decent, kind, moral, and pretty peachy! They often cannot understand why others react to them in a negative fashion, because in their mind, they are heroes.

Clueless nasty people are often plagued by some internal nastiness. They may be closet racists, sexists, homo-phobics, or harbor some other kind of hatred and fear. However, they do very little self examination, and do not realize this about themselves.

They surround themselves with yes-men so that uncomfortable self-truths can be swept under the rug. In fact, everything is constructed with Sleeping Beauty like precision so that they will never prick themselves on a mirror, see their true image, and fall into a deep swoon.

Clueless nasty people will never admit to making mistakes. Taking that first step, may cause them to slip and fall into the trap of self-examination, and that is a fate worse than death.

7. Not Nasty People

Nasty is a relative concept.

One person’s “nasty” may be another person’s gem. All of us have different nasty tolerances. In online venues be it HubPages, Facebook, Twitter, or somewhere else, it is easy to misunderstand others, and jump to “nasty” conclusions. Frequently, we take offense when none was intended.

How can you tell nasty from not nasty?

• Not nasty people are quick to apologize and try to smooth things over.
• Not nasty people will often use humor to try and diffuse unpleasant situations.
• Not nasty people will try to meet you half-way, or sometimes even more than half-way.
• Not nasty people will find some common ground so that everyone can resolve the misunderstanding in a civilized fashion.

Nobody’s perfect. Many of us know nasty people, are related to them, have them for parents, or may even be married to them. We may even be one of the “nasties”.

Can we fix nasty people?

The solution to nasty seems to be really simple; indeed it is shouted across the rooftops by many psychologists, fake psychologists, religious gurus, and self proclaimed human experts:

“Just be nice dammit!; even to the nasty people.”

It seems that if we are nice enough, nasty would somehow fix itself.

While true, this simple solution is not precise enough for practical use. More careful analysis reveals that fixing nasty can be achieved through a process called conditioning. All animals, including the human kind, will repeat behaviors that get them good results and reduce behaviors that get them bad results.

To fix nasty people, we simply have to ignore their nasty behaviors, and reward their neutral or positive behaviors.

Can it truly be that simple?

No, it is not simple. To fix nasty people, you need to be extremely patient, extremely observant, and extremely empathic of others. These are all qualities that are difficult to find in modern man.

Fixing nasty people is often a long and painful process, with very few rewards along the way, and no guarantee of success at the end.

Sometimes, it may just be best to avoid nasty and save ourselves.
