- Fire is a symbol of rejuvenation. It can cleanse and purify.
- Fire sustain us, but it can also destroy. We need warmth to survive, but uncontrolled fire can cause untold pain and destruction.
- Fire can provide illumination and show us the way when we are in the dark.
- Fire is also a symbol of war, might, aggression, and male power.
- Fire is linked to transformation and change. For example, the Phoenix is a bird of fire that after death, is reborn from the ashes of its predecessor.
Which of these meanings fire has in our dream will depend a lot on the surrounding context. In particular,
- Kindling a fire to serve our purposes is very different from a fire that is blazing out of control.
- A fire that warms and comforts us is different from a fire which causes fear and excruciating pain.
- The objects and people associated with the fire are also important.
This is why in dream interpretation, it is important to remember the details of our dream, for example through the use of a dream journal.
1. Dream of Fire and Control
If we dream that we are in control of the fire and are using it to serve our own needs, then fire has a positive meaning. It also signals that we want change to occur.
- Kindling a fire for others indicates that we are helping or guiding those around us. Sharing a campfire can also express a need or interest in socializing and companionship.
- Kindling a fire in our home, particularly during cold or inclement weather, suggests some imminent good fortune, we may be trying to conceive, or expecting a visit from close friends or family.
- Kindling a fire while on a journey shows that we are being creative, innovative, or leading a new venture.
- A controlled fire burning in the hearth signals comfort, warmth, and light. We may be contented with our current state of affairs. Searching for a hearth fire in our dream, may signal that we are seeking comfort and illumination in our life.
If the kindled fire is extinguished by rain in our dream, it could suggest a loss of money, job, comfort, or security.
On the other hand, if we are setting an uncontrolled fire with the purpose of destroying people, objects, and property (i.e. arson), then we are likely harboring some jealousy, bitterness, or hatred in our life toward a co-worker, friend, or relative.
- Dreaming we are setting fire to ourselves, indicates that we may be experiencing extreme stress or emotional turmoil in our life, and feel like we are burning up. It may also indicate that we want to remove some aspect of our life or personality.
- Dreaming we are a firefighter or are trying to put out a fire suggests that there are many complicated and high stress problems that are demanding our attention. There are perhaps many challenges that we may have to face and we will need to work hard to overcome them. Trying to stop a fire can also express a desire to prevent change in our life.
- Dreaming we are a fire eater shows that we have strong emotions, but they are currently being kept under control. However, if we become consumed by the fire, then our emotions may be starting to overwhelm us.
- Dreaming we are worshiping fire expresses a love for war or conflict. We may feel strongly that a resolution can only be achieved through the use of force or physical might. It may also indicate a wish for finding a more masculine partner, or the need to cultivate more masculine qualities in ourselves.
2. Dream of Fire and How We Feel
How we feel during our fire dream is also very important.
Feeling pain from being burned by our dream fire, may indicate that our current life situation is threatening and painful. There could be an unresolved issue that is causing us subconscious pain. We may be consumed by ambition, anger, frustration, and other strong emotions. We may be going through an emotionally painful break-up, or having difficult problems at work.
If we are struck by pain or discomfort from the heat of a blaze or feel its bite on our face, we may be worried of being the subject of slander, jealousy, spite, or other types of verbal and emotional abuse.
Feeling good or excited from seeing our heart on fire suggests strong positive emotions or love for someone in our life. We may currently be in an exciting relationship, and have intense desire toward our current partner.
Feeling tired or nothing at all from being burned by fire suggests that we are feeling burned-out or unmotivated.
Feeling fear and great uncertainty from a large out of control fire or firestorm signals a worry for insubordination, civic disorder, or chaos around us. There may be signs of unhappiness and insubordination at work or we may worry about social unrest in our current area. More black smoke indicates greater danger.
Feeling cool and comfortable in a fire represents a pure heart. We are confident of our current course in life, and are certain of our faith and decisions. There are no unresolved issues or deceits that are troubling us.
Feeling protected and safe in a fire may mean that we have a trusted partner or a strong support group of friends, family, or co-workers that will help keep us safe from whatever adversity that may arise in our life.
3. Dream of Fire and Objects
The objects in our fire dream are also very important for interpreting its meaning.
1. House.
A common object that appears in many fire dreams is a house. Our house or home often represents us or our family. Dreaming that our house is on fire may indicate large changes that are coming and uncertainty over those changes. It may also reflect tumultuous personal emotions, loss of mental peace, or being overwhelmed by strong feelings.
A raging uncontrolled fire in our town signals broader issues affecting our community. There could be economic issues that cause job losses or political unrest.
Finally, seeing the ruins of our house or town after a fire indicates loss and sadness. We may be worried of losing someone or something important to us (e.g. family, friends, job, money), or have recently experienced such a loss in our life.
2. Fire extinguisher.
Trying to put out a fire with an extinguisher represents a desperate need to suppress emotions and desires, or avoid changes that are happening in our life.
3. Other people.
If we see another person being burned, it shows that we have strong feelings or emotions toward that person. Whether those feelings are positive or negative will depend a lot on what we are feeling in our dream, and whether the person is comfortable or in pain from the fire.
Sharing the light of someone else’s fire may indicate a desire to share in the knowledge and companionship of others. We may be feeling lonely or stagnant, and be yearning for experiences with new people.
The Meaning of Fire Dreams
To interpret the meaning of our fire dreams, we want to pay attention to –
- Whether we are in control of the fire. In particular, did we start the fire and is the fire currently being used for our comfort, safety, and illumination.
- What we feel with regard to our dream fire. Were we afraid of it or comforted by its warmth? Were we comfortable and renewed by the fire, or did we feel pain and fear?
- Other objects and people in our dream.

I dreamt I was having a party with all people I knew in the Trafford centre, I then went to a kitchen like area and sprayed some sort of deodorant then left the kitchen, a friend came running up to me after and told me I’d set the building on fire, for some reason my girlfriend was living in a residential part of the Trafford centre so ran to her dorm, but the guard wouldn’t let me in and laughed at me when I said the building was on fire so I grabbed his head hit it into a wall and threw him down stairs. I was running to my girlfriends room when someone told me the fire had gone out, knowing the fire was no where near the room I was heading too i turned back to see what damage I had done I walked back round the outside and was met with a horrible sight of complete ash with body’s poking out of it people’s faces that I’ve never seen before dead. Then I woke up. While in the dream I thought it was real life. What does this mean? The dream made me feel very uneasy

Oh my God. This maybe has no meaning. I dreamt about a woman in a cage surrounded by fire and there was a man, staying with the back at me, really dark that kept saying “Dana” and wanted to do something evil. I was crying and my arms and legs were burning. I wanted to help so much and that man was so creepy.

I dreamt that a lady who had taken the role of my mother, burnt our house down and burnt herself along with an infant who was apparently my brother in the dream although I don’t have any siblings in reality. And after a while in the same dream, a friend of mine found a jacket that belonged to me in a bathroom, and I hugged her and cried thanking her. I recently disposed of the jacket in reality because it didn’t fit me anymore.

I had a dream last night, of two houses. One was a large Victorian styled hotel and the other was an old wooden house on a hill (I have never seen either place in my waking life). The terrain was hilly with a lake and wooded areas. There was a dirt path to ride a cart around the terrain and both buildings.
My dream started with me inside of the hotel, enjoying the facilities and modern amenities (it was a lot more modern inside of the hotel). I was there visiting with a friend (but I am not clear on who exactly this friend was). I was in a large gym-like room when I first heard about the fire. There were other people just going about their business as usual, even with the news of the fire. I went back to my room, in relative urgency, to gather a few items and head outside. As I was walking through the lobby, I could see the area where the fire started, but it was moving slowly and I had time, it seemed. The lights were still on and most other people were just going about their business as if the hotel wasn’t on fire. I left the hotel via the wooden patio/deck and walked out to the dirt path. There were still guests enjoying wine on the terrace and wooden deck, as if nothing wrong was happening.
For some reason someone told me there was a house up on the hill, and it was on fire too. I got into a golf cart of sorts and rode through the trees and up the hill to the big wooden white house on the hill. I could clearly see fire spitting out of a broken window and fire licking up the walls of the back of the house. I didn’t see any people there, so I just basically rode around the building to confirm it was on fire….and as I was heading back to the hotel, I wondered…where were the firefighters (even if they were volunteer firefighters)?
This dream moved very slow, seemed like hours had gone by in my viewing and wondering. The fires moved impossibly slow, too. Never like the real-world scenarios in waking life. I saw the fire move across the ceilings of the hallways of the hotel, over an hour after it started. The lights were still on and the guests and people were still moving with no urgency. And still….I wondered, where were the firefighters and when would they come? Surely these buildings will both be piles of ash if no one comes. It was a very rural location in the foothills of a mountain or something like that.
And that was it. That was the dream.

I have had this dream since 2011 or 2012 ,cant remember. My husband is in it. We are driving in a red car. We are going fast and Im yelling..”SLOW DOWN,You’re scaring me”. He ignores me,doesn’t say a word. We end up in an accident. No other cars around or people, houses…nothing. we hit the corner of a guard rail and our vehicle flies over it ,and flips over and over. I feel actual pain and being scared. My husbands seat belt is stuck. So I told him” Ill help you, then you get out and pull me out,my leg is broken” So he gets out. He stands by the car, staring at me with this look of emptiness. The car starts sparking and a fire starts. Im screaming “please Josh….let me out, help me,please..dont let me die. I say it over and over. Then he turns around and walks away.
I remember the dream as if it really happened. Only 3 dreams in my life have I ever remembered in full detail. But this one, the ending gets worse. The ladt time, about 6 am this morning…I could feel the fire, the burning,It hurt so bad.
Idk why I keep having them. My husband was a soldier for 13 years, who has saved countless guys from fire (and everything else from over there)I wake up and sometimes real tears are on my face and Im so angry at him for hours (in real life)HELP.

I dreamt that I started to fight my ex best friend, at first I tried to be cordial but she was being snobbish. I couldn’t take it so I started to fight her, I was on top of her messing her face up. Everyone around us was recording, I guess I blacked out but regained consciousness when I heard sirens and stopped and walked away. I saw the recording off of someone’s phone that I knew and when in was on top of her we both were indulged by the flame, she just laid flat and weak but still alive. It felt like I was in a bubble at that point. I haven’t talked to her in month’s but I think of her because she was like a backstabbing sister.

I dreamed that I was having a fight or battle with someone. I was fully prepared and I have lots of weapons with me, mostly sharp and metal weapons. But I didn’t succeed, he showered me with a lot gas and burned me alive and then chopped my body into pieces. But I didn’t feel anything my body were numb, but I looked on my body and admitted to myself that I got defeated while there was a music playing on the background.

We had just moved into a new house I smelled smoke but couldn’t see anything. Suddenly the alarm started going off and the lights started flickering with it. I still couldn’t see anything, finally in the mirror it caught my eye a chair was on fire it was already engulfed. My family was with me and asked where the fire extinguisher was. Since we just moved in I didn’t know. My dad threw a bucket of water at it but it made things worse. I ran upstairs to find a non synthetic blanket, found one and drenched it in water. I remember thinking it was much lighter than I expected it to be. We put the fire out and I woke up.
Notes: the fire never spread, i have never seen the house before. I felt adrenaline but not scared, I knew I could handle this I just had to find the right tool for the job.
If anyone reads this and has any insight please let me know.

I was with my mum in the housing discussing about failure of enrolling my son to kindy. When I came out, the fire burning down have reached the roof with minimal destruction. I was surprised. I sensed people looking behind me too with disbelief. I don’t know how and who put it off.

Dreamt a stupid woman in a waiting room with me (no real person I know) was allowing her 2 year old boy to play with a lighter. I didn’t speak out against it because I didn’t want to come off as being judgemental of her parenting. Eventually the fire spread to the wall, and I ran out of the building to the parking lot with everyone else while she stopped to clean out her purse, still in the waiting room. The building exploded. I don’t know if she or the boy survived, and regretted not speaking out against her stupidity. Weird part of the dream was the head fire fighter outside was a pregnant woman. She asked me “Why didn’t you grab the boy at least? Do you know if he got out?” I felt so ashamed and said “Because he wasn’t my kid…”

I never dream, until lately. I dreamed a couple of weeks ago that my husband, an electrician, was electrocuted. The next evening he was shocked severely under a house while connecting a water heater.
The night before last, I dreamed a house caught on fire the same way. I recall the fire running across the wood joists and getting bigger and bigger and spreading fast. Last night we were at that house. My husband was under it. I didn’t think about it until he brought a burnt up wire from under the house and I found a burnt up wire in the house behind a light socket. I called my aunt. She’s a pastor and we prayed over that house. I remembered after that I had left two candles lit inside and ran in and blew them out. My aunt asked if I’d warned my husband and I said no. Thank goodness I was there to pray over him and the house. Who knows maybe I had started it with the candles in my dream and blowing out the candles stopped it. I had the most eerie feeling at that house last night.
